Día De Los Muertos: No money no fiesta
27/04/14 || Cobal
Being such a short EP, I probably could have simply stubbed this one. The thing is Día de los Muertos is one of the most active acts in the US-based Latin American scene of today, and their first and only LP, “Satánico Dramático”, caught my attention greatly three years ago. “No money no fiesta” on the other hand, is a bit of a surprise.
Before getting to the point I’d like to say how fucken disappointed I was by the cancellation of the “Hell and Heaven Metal Fest” in Mexico, my home land, due to discrimination in some degree, but mainly political and show business corruption. Intended to be THE Latin American metal fest, #HH14 would bring a number of international bands to Texcoco, an old town near Mexico City for two days. Día de los Muertos was definitely one of the bands I was looking forward to seeing the most. Pity.
In the past, these people deployed solid death metal tracks with much evidence of thrash and grindcore. Their stuff might be described as a heavier, more forthcoming version of Arch Enemy, female vocals included. “No money no fiesta” follows the same path, except it goes for a faster, more aggressive sound and humor still plays a central role here. In brief, “Malinchista” and “Adios M.F.” could easily be tracks of a previous release, “Cantina del Infierno” has some punk attitude to it and its chorus makes me wonder where these guys take inspiration from, “No money no fiesta” is pure grindcore worship, and “Crush, kill, destroy” brings the daily shot of old school to the table. Short and in-your-face, this EP is no joke… Or is it?
Me, I got my death just the way I like it: straight, tight and in small doses. So taking it for what it is,
